Massage is an ancient holistic health practice, with many health benefits. Hippocrates, the Greek Physician, (460-377BC) described the Medical benefits of anointing [with oils] and massage. Similarly, Galen (129-199AD) wrote extensively on the benefits of ‘Manual Medicine’.
Massage provides tactile stimuli which improves skin tone, mobilizes cellulite, and assists in circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body.
Abdominal massage can promote and assist healthy digestive function
Through mobilization, movement and touch, massage enhances the function of muscles and joints. Massage therapists are trained in performing particular Active and Passive stretches during the massage treatment to facilitate this.
Massage eases aches and pains by mobilizing accumulated lactic acid from the muscles and assists the body to remove toxins via the lymphatic system.
Deep Tissue and Lymphatic Massage are specialized forms of massage which maybe use to assist the body to do this in a gentle but profound way.
Massage can alleviate pain and enhance the healing of injuries. Massage is particularly helpful in treating sporting injuries, reducing the healing time of injuries and also enhances athletic performance by promoting muscle tone, flexibility, joint mobility and blood flow.
Massage therapists can help relieve tension headaches, by working to release trigger points and referred pain in the head and neck area. Enjoying a regular Massage can also help release and reduce stress, improve mood and promote calmness via the release of natural Endorphins. Massage and healing touch promotes and elicits the Relaxation Response.
Research has shown that regular massage can reduced subjective stress levels, leading to measurably lower Cortisol levels (Adrenaline and Cortisol are hormones released in times of stress) thereby promoting enhanced perception of wellbeing and coping mechanisms. In a more physiological sense lower cortisol levels have also been linked to enhanced immunity levels. Therefore, in a holistic way regular massage can be shown to improve overall physical, emotional and mental health and wellbeing.
