Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a natural healing technique that in its most simplistic form utilizes the “laying on of hands”. Reiki is a Japanese word which loosely translates to mean Universal Energy (Rei – Mystery/Holy/ Nature/Spirit/Universe) (Ki – Life Energy). The concept of Reiki Energy is understood to be a form of energy that exists throughout the universe and in the space around all living things. This concept is known and described under differing names in each culture on Earth. In China this energy is known as Chi. In Polynesia, the Hunas call this healing energy force Mana, and the Native American Iroquois people call it Orenda. In India it is know as Prana and in Islamic countries is called Barraka. Indigenous Australian Aboriginals describe a concept of conscious awareness life energy or dadirri. In Hebrew and the Christian traditions which flow from the holy lands it is known variously as Ruach, Elohim, Shekinah, Sophia and as evidence of the healing power of The Holy Spirit. More recently, Quantum Physics describes a form of all pervading energy that exists before matter, is more ‘fluid’ than electrons and which exists within the sub-atomic space.

This form of Reiki healing; thought to have existed many thousands of years ago; was re-discovered by Mikao Usui a physician and theologian, in Kyoto Japan around 1914. Dr Usui studied and meditated for many years in his quest to understand how Buddha and Christ healed the sick without depleting their own inner energy. Today, Reiki energy belongs to anyone ready to receive the gift of healing, to relieve pain, provide comfort, warmth, healing energy and provide peace to self and others. Reiki channels generally progress through three levels of training, accomplishment and growth before they are known as a Reiki Master.

Reiki is a God-given gift which enables the practitioner to channel this healing energy from above, through their hands into the body of a receiver. The Usui system of Reiki healing teaches particular hand positions as developed by Dr Usui, that are often employed in Reiki healing sessions. However, Reiki energy has an inherent intelligence or consciousness, and will gently move to the area of most need, depending on the physical, mental and emotional state of the client, and the will of God.

Reiki healing is aligned with Love and the Divine Presence and therefore will only work with permission, within the free will of the client for their highest good. During a treatment, Reiki healing energy maybe experienced by clients as a feeling of warmth and deep peace. The Reiki practitioner acts primarily as a Channel for the Reiki energy to ignite self-healing within the client. Reiki does not conflict with any religious or meditative practices but will promote spiritual growth, healing and change. Reiki healing energy works holistically to harmonize the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of both the client and practitioner.
