Reflexology is a holistic healing technique of targeted ‘massage’ that utilizes reflex points on the feet, hands and/or ears to balance and promote holistic health and wellbeing. Reflexology involves the application of specific pressures to reflex points which correspond to particular body systems and organs. A reflex is an unconscious involuntary response to a stimulus. In reflexology, when reflexes on the feet, hands and/or ears are stimulated during a treatment, it elicits in the client, a response in the particular body organ or system that relates to that reflex point. When these reflex areas are stimulated by a trained Reflexology practitioner, profound improvements in health can occur.

Knowledge of the reflex points used in Reflexology relates to the same knowledge base as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. However, the practice of Foot Reflexology is thought to be more ancient. An Egyptian Pictograph dated around 2500 BC found in the tomb of the Egyptian Physician, Ankmahor, depicts two men treating the feet of another two men. The hieroglyphic above the pictograph has been translated to read; Patient says: “Do not hurt me” and the Practitioner replies: “I shall act so you praise me” (Dougans & Ellis, 1997, p. 5). This is not to suggest that Reflexology sessions are painful, but only that areas of tenderness in relation to reflex points are often indicative of weakness and imbalances in the corresponding area of the body.

The primary goal of Reflexology is to promote a return to equilibrium or balance within the body-mind-spirit of the client. A reflexology treatment promotes blood circulation, especially venous return, stimulates muscle fibres and nerve endings. Reflexology helps reduce tension and promotes relaxation. Reflexology sessions are often experienced as being deeply relaxing, with the majority of clients finding that they drift off to sleep during a treatment. Not only is Reflexology useful in re-balancing states of ill health, but it is also important in maintaining good health and wellbeing.
