Kinesiology (pronounced kin-ease-e-ology) means the study of motion; in particular the study of human muscle movements and motion. Human skeletal muscles are considered to be under our voluntary control and moved via electrical nerve impulses that travel along the neurons to the muscle fibres to enable movement. These nerve endings and muscle bundles with the assistance of electron donors such as calcium and magnesium ions, water, oxygen and glucose comprise the basis of this electro-biochemical mechanism which we understand simply in our daily lives as skeletal muscle contraction. Enabling muscle movements that allow most of us to move around, grasp objects and perform our daily work tasks.

A related concept is that of kinetic and potential energy. The nerve synapses possess a potential energy in their ability to transmit electrical impulses and the muscle fibres possess a kinetic energy in their ability to exert force on the bones of the skeleton and move the human body.

Let us consider for a moment though, that the human body is more than just the sum of its physical parts; that in our humanness we are more than a collection of electrical nerve impulses and biochemical pathways. What if there are other factors that can effect our muscle reactions and responses?

During the 1960’s an American Chiropractor, George Goodheart (18 Aug 1918 - 5 Mar 2008), began to research the effect of muscle testing on muscle function, posture and general body imbalances. Through research he demonstrated kinesthetic evidence of the negative effects of psychological stress on physical body health and function. His research lead him, in later years, to develop Applied Kinesiology and Touch for Health.

The phenomenon of “muscle testing” is an integral part of most forms of Kinesiology. Whereby a voluntary skeletal muscle is used as a bio-feedback mechanism to indicate situations of stress in the individual being tested.
The discipline of Kinesiology has expanded greatly since the initial work of Dr Goodheart, although a core principle remains the use of muscle testing.

Muscle testing can be used to elicit information on food sensitivities, psychological stressors, irrational phobias, and patterns of self-sabotage, learning difficulties as well as many other things. Once uncovered, this information can then be utilized to improve performance by balancing the body against the stress, fear or other blockage.
